The middle-distance runner Pía Fernández is one of the best athletes in the history of Uruguay. She began to practice athletics at the age of 13, specializing in 800 meters in minor categories, until her coach, Sebastián Allende, convinced her to change permanently to the 1500.
She has been several times champion of Uruguay in both distances and holds the national records in 1000m, 1500m, 3000m, 5000m and 3000m steeplechase, although she has never specifically prepared these last two distances.
On the international scene, she was proclaimed South American champion in 1500 meters in 2019 in Lima, after reached the bronze four years before on the same place. In addition, also in Peru she achieved the fifth place at the Pan American Games, and the gold medal in 3000m and silver in 1500m at the Ibero American Championship.
